Description
As part of our study of different aspects of psychology, you will complete a year–long research project in which you will explore a question related to students’ attitudes about learning. As part of this project, you will create a proposal and hypothesis, develop a research methodology, complete data collection, analyze the data, and make conclusions based on the data analysis. You will work on this project alone or with a partner. We will work on the different parts of the research project together in class so I can help you complete each milestone.
You will create written reports for each of the major milestones on the project. Each of these reports will be a section of the final paper. After you have completed all of the milestones, you will have time to make revisions and combine the different sections to create your final research report. The paper will be in APA format. I will provide instruction on APA formatting. You will also present your research findings to the rest of your class.
Timeline:
Semester 1
1. Proposal and hypothesis – What do you plan to study and what you think you will find when you do the study?
2. Research into different psychological schools of thought – Research different theories of learning. Write a summary of the different learning theories. Indicate which you think applies to your research.
3. Methodology – Create a survey that asks questions about what you want to study. Decide who you want to collect information from.
4. Start data collection – Have the target population complete the surveys.
Semester 2
5. Complete data collection – Have the target population complete the surveys. You should have 30 – 50 completed essays.
6. Statistical analysis – Look at your data and see what trends appear.
7. Discussion of results in terms of at least 2 psychological schools of thought.
8. conclusions and proposals for future study – What conclusions can you draw from your data. What do you think you should have done differently?
Paper sections:
We will go over each of these sections in class. You will be provided a handout with the due dates for each section of the paper.
1. proposal and hypothesis
2. discussion of different schools of thought
3. description of data collection methodology
4. description of statistical analysis (quantitative or qualitative)
5. discussion of results
6. conclusion and ideas for future study
Grading
You will receive a grade for completing each milestone. You will also receive a grade for the final research paper that is due towards the end of semester 2. This project counts as 50% of your overall grade in the class.
